We assumed that the car would have a navigating system, but no. With Google's teeny map and the arrows on the side of it, we somehow managed to arrive, in total darkness, to Lorre's house in America.
And what a wonderful quilting land awaited. There were quilts everywhere; folded, on the wall and in folded away, waiting, in cupboards. On top of the fact that Lorre does an enormous amount of quilts, she is also interested in buying antique quilts on e-bay. People find old quilts from their attics, and don't realize their value. The age of the quilts can be seen from the fabrics and designs.
My trip had two purporses, the more important one was to get familiar with the long arm quilting machine. Lorre has had a Gammill Statler Stitcher for a while now, and she showed and told me how the machine works. From the picture you can see that it takes up a lot of space.
We also did a day trip to Lancaster, which is an Amish-area, and one in the US that is very interested in fabrics. From the picture you can see that we weren't the first ones in the store !
The hallways were long and full of fabric packs. My instructions were to take everything that I liked, and then in the cutting process I could decide if I wanted them and how big the pieces would be.
Tässä oli minun ostoskärry. Isompikin olis voinut olla.
Here's my trolley. Could have been bigger.
Inspired by Antique Quilts.
Lorre had her quilting friend Kathie with, and together they had 1 1/2 times the amount as I did (above), and they bought more of each fabric that I did. Here is Kathie's blog, Inspired by Antique Quilts. I can say that she is almost a celebrity, her works have been on many covers of quilting magazines.
They taught me how to buy fabrics, although my choices were pretty much one type. :D I tried my best and when we got back home, the trunk of the car was full of bags. I carried 56kg of fabrics back to Finland.
Kotona sitten odottikin uusi urakka, koska halusin uusien oppien mukaan taitella kaikki kankaani, uudet ja vanhat. Eikö olekin hemaiseva näky.
At home I had the next task, because with my new skills I wanted to fold all of my fabrics, the new and the old. Isn't this a scene ?
